چکیده

I am grateful for the opportunities I have had of associating myself in thyroid work with the late Cecil Joll, Sir Thomas Dunhill and Geoffrey Kaynes, and for the benefit derived by me from their vast experience. I wish to thank Miss E. M. Dean, Laboratory Technician to New End Hospital, for her careful compiling of statistics and records; Mr. J. E. Andrews, L.C.C. Medical Photographer and finally Dr. J. W. Linnell for his kindness in criticising this paper.

Clinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Quinine in Children

Quinine is the best studied drug for treating severe malaria in very young children. Quinine may be administered in pregnancy and, at therapeutic doses, malformations have not been reported. Some strains of quinine from Southeast Asia and South America have become resistant. Quinine is the treatment of choice for the drug-resistant severe Plasmodium falciparum. The antimalarial mechanism of qui...

Clinical Observations on Malaria Cases with Dangerous Cerebral Manifestations

an apparently healthy sleep into deep coma; or how viciously a pernicious malaria infection may hide itself behind a very varied clinical picture resembling a score of different conditions of almost any organ or system of the body. Cerebral malaria has been diagnosed as cerebrospinal meningitis; and in this journal only recently attention has been drawn to the fact that even the function and st...

Worms can worsen malaria: towards a new means to roll back malaria?

Recent studies in Africa and Asia indicate that different helminthic infections adversely affect the clinical outcome of malaria infections. This suggests that helminths can influence the acquisition of immunity against Plasmodium. Worms could constitute a confounding factor in the assessment of efficacy of malaria-control intervention, including vaccine prototypes in clinical trials. These obs...

Clinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Artemisinin-Based Combination and other Artemisinins in Children

In 2010, there were estimated 219 million cases of malaria resulting in 666,000 deaths and two-thirds were children. Children are more vulnerable than adults to malaria parasites. In sub-Saharan African countries, maternal malaria is associated with up to 200,000 estimated infant deaths yearly. Malaria is caused by five Plasmodium parasites namely: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasm...

Cytokines and clinical manifestations of malaria in adults with severe and uncomplicated disease.

Pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines are supposed to be involved in malaria pathogenesis. Their relationship with clinical manifestations of the disease, however, is rarely studied in adults from non-endemic countries with imported disease, particularly with severe malaria. In this study we compared serum levels of gamma interferon (IFNgamma) and interleukins: IL-12, IL-18, IL-10 in healthy adu...

Relationship between exposure, clinical malaria, and age in an area of changing transmission intensity.

The relationship between malaria transmission intensity and clinical disease is important for predicting the outcome of control measures that reduce transmission. Comparisons of hospital data between areas of differing transmission intensity suggest that the mean age of hospitalized clinical malaria is higher under relatively lower transmission, but the total number of episodes is similar until...
